Tile is the most popular flooring in Florida for good reason: it is permanent, easy to clean, handles humidity and sand, and stays cool underfoot.

There are many tiles to choose from and they are not all equal. We recommend shopping with a locally owned tile showroom, where staff have time to help you, and we are happy to look at your choices with you.

Preparation is everything

Many floor problems start before the first tile goes down. Is the floor flat and level enough for the tile you chose? Larger tiles need a flatter floor. Most Pinellas County homes are built on concrete slabs, so we check the slab for cracks, high and low spots, and how well it will bond with the mortar. Tile over a wood subfloor, common in second floors and additions, needs its own materials and methods.

Getting this right is what keeps a floor from cracking, popping loose or showing lippage (uneven edges between tiles). The last thing you want is to pay for beautiful porcelain and then have to tear it out.

What tile should you choose for a floor?

We recommend porcelain

For durability and low maintenance, porcelain is hard to beat. By definition, porcelain absorbs 0.5% of its weight in water or less. Glazed porcelain is a little easier to clean; unglazed porcelain can have better slip resistance.

Shade variation

Tile is rated from V1 (little or no change from piece to piece) to V4 (a lot of variation in color and texture). Check the rating so the finished floor looks the way you expect.

Dye lots

Tiles are fired at high heat, so color can vary slightly from one batch to the next. Each box shows its lot. Order enough from the same lot to finish the job, plus 5 to 20% extra depending on the pattern, and keep a few spares for future repairs.

Questions about tile floors

Can you tile over my existing tile floor?

Sometimes, but usually we recommend removing it. Tiling over old tile raises the floor height at doorways and cabinets, and any bonding problem under the old tile becomes a problem for the new floor. We will tell you honestly after we look at it.

Do you install wood-look plank tile?

Yes. Wood-look porcelain gives you the look of hardwood with the water resistance of tile, which is a good fit for Florida homes.
